Gift Shop
Many guests want souvenirs of their visit and gifts for friends, but sometimes they’re travelling every day during shopping hours. The Grasmere gift shop is open all the time and features a range of unique New Zealand crafts, artworks and other items, including garments made from fine Merino wool combined with silk or the fur of the introduced and pesky Australian opossum.
These animals are devouring the New Zealand bush at the estimated rate of 200 logging trucks of vegetation every single night, so wearing their fur is an extremely Green action! Our bush recovers much more slowly from their predations than the Australian bush, and we have no native predators to keep them under control.
Goods in the shop are all produced in New Zealand, mostly in the South Island, and we know personally the craftspeople that supply us.
